The Importance of Self-Care

Self-care has become a very popular phrase. Everywhere you look, on social media, in blogs, and in books, people are talking about the importance of self-care. What is Self-Care and why is it so important? Also, why is it so taboo for others?

When we take a look at the actual definition of self-care it is the "practice of taking action to preserve or improve one's own health" or "the practice of taking an active role in protecting one's own well-being and happiness, in particular during periods of stress." Basically, it is anything that you do in order to purposely take care of your own physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual health. This can be anything from going for a walk, getting more sleep, spending time with someone you love, or a hobby.

Why is it important? Self-Care is important because it is vital in helping you stay healthy and cope with stress. When we don't take care of ourselves we get run down easier, can get sick easier, get overwhelmed by things happening in life, and may even be a little more short-tempered or not as easy to get along with. We may find our fuse to be a little shorter during times of stress.

What is self-care not? Self-Care is not selfish. Self-care is essential to a person's well-being. Taking better care of yourself allows you to better help others. Self-Care is more than just skincare routines or getting nails done, it is about taking care of the whole person-body, mind, and spirit. While these things can certainly be part of self-care they are not the only things that makeup self-care. Have you ever thought about what your self-care would look like?
